Velvet Revolver!!!!!!!! Come on Come In

One of the music videos we actually found just before the filming process was a video by American rock band ‘Velvet Revolver’ and there song ‘Come On, Come In’, which was released as the recently formed bands fifth single, after all of them had formed after the end of there previously successful bands, such as Guns N Roses and the Stone Temple Pilots. The song was released on the soundtrack to the movie The Fantastic Four, which was a Marvel comic book before the film was released, and the video takes most of it’s inspiration from the comic book format. The video is here on YouTube, http://youtube.com/watch?v=dy_Wl6vOFvg. Though we found it after we had the idea, it does have features which show similarities to the ideas we already had. The first sign of the comic book style is after the track out of the camera from the amplifier. Obviously the video had a higher budget than ours, but the backgrounds are all CGI, and give it a real feel of cartoon, as well as drawing attention to the performers. The other idea is the framing, like in a comic book, which you can see it zoom out to in the opening scene here as Slash plays the opening riff. One of the main parts of the video I really like but don’t think we will be able to achieve with ours in the time constraints is the feeling that the camera is panning across a comic page instead of just switching to static shots, like it shows straight after the first scene. The video is mainly performance based as it fits in with this genre and also allows shots of the movie to be incorporated without being as complex as if there was another story. As scene at 0:28, the camera is never still very often and is always tracking which gives a good effect, though with are video the characters move where as they don’t here, so it wouldn’t have the same effect. The idea of more than one shot on screen at the same time as at 0:31 is an idea we immediately thought of, and here it uses pictures rather than videos, drawing the eye to the moving screen. Another idea we wanted to use is shown to an extent at 0:47, where the lead singer Scott Weiland is turned into a Pop Art style video at the right of the screen, we didn’t want Pop Art, but it has the same effect. I think another good point from the video is the constant feeling that there always something happening and keeping it interesting as there are lots of cuts and also lots of panning across from on frame to another.

Analysis

Love Killer

Visuals - The video uses the same style as our video by using split screens. though to a different effect. Whereas ours has a reason a reasons for using the split screens as comic style and too convey a story, theres doesn't have a reason. They also have sometimes just put random white lines over it, and made the different parts jump around which is more scruffy.
Similarly both of are transitions are poor. Ours sometimes is different. where as theres leaves blank spaces and isn't cut cleanly enough so some shots before come through where they shouldn't

Lip sync - We like to think that are lip sync is very good, most of the time though mainly through YouTubes fault when its not, it looks very good, especially in the first singing example. Theres is more unbelievable, and it doesn't come across as he's singing it, due to a worse sync.

Feedback

Genre
It takes the conventions of comic books and pop art and makes them visual, effects are typical of lichtenstien. Indie genre. comic is quite typical- performance, clothing are conventional of the indie genre, intertextual, comics animation pop art etc

Relationships
The 1,1,1 makes 3 very effective, really like it overall

Camerawork

Lots of different shots, angles, really cleverly worked out, cartoon shots worked really well, splits screen worked really well. Lots of good close ups on Adams mouth, looked wicked. Speerch bubbles really worked with the camera work, very good

Editing

Editing i that it was well edited, writing to fast, like the use of screens in one, a bit too much empty space. Transitions a bit odd

Mise en scene
Fairly good, guitar and microphone worked well and library and the comic book Characters could ahve wore more different clothes to be more different, easier to tell apart.

Special effects
Whole video based on SFX such as (list) Help the ideas to come alive and helps the video to be interesting and visually impressive. Without effects it would have been really hard to do what they would have done, without making it confusing.

ACTION PLAN

From our feedback we got mainly positive feedback our only draw back was that our rough cut was only 12 seconds long. This tells us that so far we are doing all good. The only thing thats worrying us are the time constraints. We will if it is needed come in for the after school session. We are prepared to go to the call of duty to get the finished product. So our action plan is to edit until our fingers drop off.

We found the right effect

Posterization - We like this effect as it almost exactly as we wanted the comic to look with the blurred, poster style edges and blocks of colour as apposed to the smooth blended colours usually found!

SKY CAPTAIN CLIP

Comic Books - Ideas

The picture above is from Sky Captain the movie. This movie uses an effect which makes the shots look as though they have been sketched. This is an effect that we hope to find on final cut to use in our music video.

Here is a black and white example of a comic book. We like the look of this comic strip as the black and white gives the comic a serious look this type of comic book would fit great with a New York Noir gangster film. The films that this reminds me of would be Sin City, the film uses a sketched affect and that is the effect that we would be looking to achieve accept that we would want it in colour. We think that if we used black and white it would spoil the songs upbeat feel.
We like this example of a star trek comic as it does all the things that are typically in comics. As you can see the speech bubbles illustrating the narrative have been used, this is very common in comics. We intend to use this technique in our video to illustrate the narrative and possibly the lyrics of the song. Another thing that has been used that is very typical in comics is the use of big, bold words to illustrate dramatic actions and noises. For example: "WHAM!" We also intend to use the big, bold words.
Above we have a picture of an example of how we intend to split the screen up in the form of a comic book style set up.

Locations for Filming

All locations will be around the Long Road Sixth Form area. We came to this decision because it will make it easier on the group since me and Adam find it easy to get to this area. Also we have permission to film around this area so we don't need to go to the hassle of finding out if we are allowed to film.

A bit of History about the Cajun Dance Party

I can't believe, I can't deny
I can't conceive whats in your eyes

Another mistake, another regret

And do you really like me

If you don't hear me
then why should i hear you

I can't walk away
all i can do is say

Pitch for The Next Untouchable

Genre: Indie
Track: The Next Untouchable
Performed by: Cajun Dance Party

The track is just short of 5 minutes, which will be extended to about 5:30 after cut scenes are added at the beginning and end.
The video will be done in a comic book style, featuring multiple screens including the band and the storyline

The comic book layout will be multiple screens placed across the screen, with the the band in various slots. The rest will be involving a chase between villains and heros. The main plot will find the hero's trying to find the band. The heros are the band themselves, attempting to find themselves. They however are being stopped by the villains, who are also themselves, showing that the band are still relatively new and still trying to find them selves, though in reality they are preventing themselves from it is themselves.

At the beginning of the video, there will be a girl or boy go into a place and pick up a comic, entitled the next untouchable. They will begin to read and there face light up and the video will resume inside the book, where the story will unfold. The heros will be running around, though being stopped by themselves, employing comic book style scenes.

Towards the end the girl zooms out and has become all indie and throws the comic away, so it lands open on the floor, where it zooms in again and completes. At the end it zooms out again and the comic closes by itself, ending on a shot of the closed book zooming out. As its blacking out, you can see someone pick it up, with a light shining in the middle of the screen, which also fades.

Shots will be a variety of closeups and mediums shots, with the occasional long. Shots of the band will be from abstract angles. For example a shot of shoes and of hats. guitars from down the neck, drum sticks, legs, dancing body parts, ect.

Indie Fashion

A key characteristic of clothing trends within the modern indie culture is focus on uniqueness and individuality,[2] which is often achieved by appealing to fashion trends associated with music from the 1970s (rock, punk and country) and the 1980s (New Wave). Common clothing items include band T-shirts (see Paul Maiorana), vintage clothing, striped tops, blazers, waistcoats, ties, cardigans, skinny jeans and Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars. A somewhat counterintuitive result of this is that though individuality is prized, or at least vocally espoused, indie culture does have an identifiable look, making it less than truly individual and more like any other subculture. This is particularly evident in the case of the Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars shoes which has become the most successful brand of shoe in history, as a result of the make being prized for its "independent" style. Surprisingly, the increase in demand for "Chucks" has, as of late, driven up the market price for the once-inexpensive footwear.

Leading figures in indie fashion include George Cohen and Joseph Newman, two of the earliest indie influences. Brand labels are sometimes rejected as an exemplification of mainstream culture, and several small companies cater to the indie style, including Tourist Attraction and Artus.[3] American Apparel.[4] however, has broken this mold and is one of the few brand labels that is accepted amongst the indie culture. A few products favorited in the indie culture include low cut v-neck shirts, drain-pipe jeans, baby bill hats, lip, nose, and septum piercings, short cut-off jean shorts or short athletic shorts, cardigans, any sort of small slip-on shoe, and an emergence of early 90's culture such as bright neon shirts, hats and jeans have also become very popular. There are counterintuitive consequences here as well: though adherents to indie culture would criticize those who patronize mainstream retail outlets for spending too much on mass-produced items, the retailers that cater to indie culture tend to be at least as expensive, if not significantly more so. The clothing chain Urban Outfitters is one example.

Indie fashion has become popular on the highstreet as the subculture grows. Stores such as TopShop, Miss Selfridge and especially H&M stock more vintage inspired quirky pieces- that, ironically, wouldn't have necessarily sold so well 10 years ago.

Views about the video

Lead singer jumping around allot
Fast cuts, but we can't achieve this as well, because the shots on screen will remain the same until the page turns.
Crowd shot is good, from behind crowd in front of stage.
Cuts went with music beat.

Original Video

Views about the video

00:30: The zoom into the book is something we would like to emulate.
Like the fact the spoken lyrics come up in time
The animation part is good, but complicated and long to achieve. Instead we may see if there are special effects on final cut to change the look
Like page peel.
It gets a bit repetitive but the concept is the same, though less animated.

Decided Idea

COMIC BOOK

We have decided that the idea which has the most potential out of the three is the comic book idea. This is because we fancied a challenge and it would be challenge us in all three departments of planning, filming, and especially editing.

The idea centers around the fact that the band is in a comic book, which will be shown by somebody picking it up in a shop or library.

Once inside the screen will split into multiple sections. some of the sections will show the band showing the song being played on a stage. Others will show the characters running about through the screens.

Initial Story Ideas

The band are playing, whilst two protagonists are trying to get to them, by running about through out the comic, jumping from screen to screen. They are though trying to be stopped by the antagonists. All characters are played by us and will run until the antagonists are defeated and the characters eventually find themselves performing.

It then ends with the girl closing the book and putting back, because she doesn't like.

We believe this will work because the song is fast paced and so would fit with the theme of comic book. Video s of this genre have random video's and despite no direct link to the lyrics, it will go with the music.

The name the next untouchable is also a rather superhero sounding name and fits with the genre and also the story of the video. It shows that the band are untouchable, even to themselves.

The performance will be done by us, as will all the other acting. The locations will be:
Band Performance: The hall on the stage to give an effect of a band playing on stage, though with no audience
The rest: The rest will be filmed around the college in lots of locations around the school.

Initial Ideas

Rock Cliche:
Traditional rock music video
vague storyline
rock cliche's, eg. Slash hat, who kit smash
lots of performance shots

positives:
Funny
Lots of inspiration

negatives:
Not doing a rock song
could potentially be bad

Comic Book:
The story is played out through a comic book fashion
lots of things on screen at once
band performances mixed with story at the same time
abstract close up

positives:
challenging
interesting
if it works it will be good

negatives:
challenging
may become boring if plot not good.

Performance Video:

Mostly the bands performance
different shots
audience

positive:
fits with genre

negatives:
have to look like we could play instruments
